Naming Conventions
A wiki is decentralized by nature. To avoid wasteful duplication, please adhere to the naming conventions below. You will be surprised how useful they can be. Quite frequently, you type in a PDF filename and lo -- it's already in the repository! Not to mention that when you follow them, you stay out of trouble without even knowing it.
PDF Filenames
The preferred format for preprints and reprints is PDF. Postscript is bloated, and MS documents can be infected with macro viruses. The filename must be formed according to one of the following templates, depending on the number of authors on the paper:
- AuthorIYY.pdf -- for single-authored papers, use the family name, the first initial, and the last two digits of the year: PetrovA06.pdf. If the family name is hyphenated, drop the hyphen and keep the capitalization: GoldmanRakicP87.pdf. If the family name contains spaces, droop them and keep the capitalization: VanEssenD90.pdf. Drop any apostrophes, umlauts, and other embellishments: OReillyR01.pdf.
- FirstSecondYY.pdf -- for double-authored papers, use the two family names and YY: PetrovAnderson05.pdf. Do not put any initials. Drop hyphens, spaces, and embellishments as per above: FellemanVanEssen91.pdf.
- FirstSecondThirdYY.pdf -- for triple-authored papers, use the three family names and YY: PetrovDosherLu05.pdf. All else is analogous to the double-authored case above.
- FirstSeocndThirdFourthFifthSixthSeventEightNineTenYY.pdf -- for papers with four or more authors, for papers with four or more authors, use the family names of all the authors in the same style as for two and three author papers: SeitzPetrovDosherFahleWatanabeVogelsShamsLiuGhoseGold09.pdf.
- The YY field is the last two digits of the year, or IP for all of "in press", "submitted", "in preparation", or UP for unpublished material that doesn't have a year.
- When there are multiple publications with exactly the same author(s) and year, disambiguate with a, b, etc: HeegerD92a.pdf, HeegerD92b.pdf. Leave the first uploaded PDF alone (with no letter after YY) and add letters to subsequent uploads. It is nice to make a wiki page with the canonical name pointing to the alternative pages.
BibTeX Entries
- Use the PDF naming conventions for the BibTeX key.
- Use Family, I. J. for the author format. Leave spaces between the initials.
- With respect to other fields, the principle is that each BibTeX entry should be self-contained. Thus, avoid abbreviated journal names, cross-references for edited volumes, etc.
Any volunteers to write some script that collects the BibTeX entries scattered throughout the wiki into a single bibliographic database?
Personal Page Names
The preferred template is FamilyIJ unless it is already taken.
