Perceptual Learning at VSS

Dear researchers interested in perceptual learning,

In the last year’s VSS many researchers interested in perceptual learning got together to have dinner. At that time, we determined the following.

(1)  We talked about how to gain greater visibility for research on perceptual learning. A concern raised was that there were too few “perceptual learning” talk sessions in VSS. Allison Sekuler and Marvin Chun (with whom I spoke later, who are on the board of VSS, made suggestions that it would be wise to coordinate submissions. Minimally, when we submit abstracts, we should make sure that we choose “Perceptual learning” as a keyword. As a further step, the board recognizes comments made in the abstract submission and if submissions are coordinated with suggestions of how a given set of abstracts will go well together in a talk session, the board will take these suggestions into account.

(2)  I raised our concern in the business meeting of VSS. As a result, I was asked to be on the review board.

(3)  We decided to make a web site and mailing list to promote communications by perceptual learning researchers. Alex Petrov and Aaron Seitz have worked hard and it is ready to open now. Please visit http://cogmod.osu.edu/wiki. Please also consider adding your name to the mailing list that is linked to that page (http://cogmod.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/plearn).

I am glad that the number of sessions entitled “Perceptual learning” has doubled this year. However, this excellent news should not make us stop making efforts to promote perceptual learning research. Thus, I think that it would be great to have a dinner meeting be held this year too.

Let me also tell you that last year I mistakenly chose Friday for the dinner, which caused some important people not to be able to attend the dinner for religious reasons. I deeply apologize for my carelessness.

Please let me know if there are any nights during this coming years meeting upon which you absolutely could not attend an event.

Let me send you e-mail again when it comes closer to VSS dates to invite you for dinner.

Sincerely,

  Takeo Watanabe
